VTA One-Act Fall Play Auditions!
The theater Department currently has a diverse population of over 120 students enrolled in classes ranging from intro to drama, musical theater, advanced acting for camera, and an award winning technical theatre program. Every quarter, CHS Theatre presents at least one major theater performance. This past semester was exceptional. Competing with two different one-act plays and two different casts, both directed by exemplary theatre students, TheatreCHS participated in the Virginia Theatre Association conference with Stephen Schwartz’s musical, Children of Eden. There they received the highest marks for a musical theater production “Best Musical Performance”. Meanwhile the C’ville Players class participated in the VHSL One-Act Play Conference with an original work, A Bum Deal.
Musical Theatre Ensemble is working on a full length production of the legendary Smokey Joes Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller, which will be performed in May both at CHS and at the IX building. Currently, there are 93 cast members involved in a massive undertaking of the spring musical, Aida. Involving the entire theater program, tech program, and music programs, over 160 students will be involved in this show in one way or the other.
Other highlights include visits to elementary schools from Intro to Drama students, trips to the Paramount to see the National Players, theatre workshops, city-wide improv nights, musical performances at Buford, and much more.
TheatreCHS has consistently remained an important and vital fine arts force at Charlottesville High School. The Program invites students to work collaboratively, develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, and engage in creative dialogues. An array of courses are taught with the intention of providing enrichment for students interested in these skills all of which encompass dramatic arts. Numerous students have gone on to pursue advanced studies in theater/cinema, technical theater, stage management, and lighting design.
The Department is a student-centered community that emphasizes the process of artistic collaboration and instills a disciplined work ethic. By practicing professionalism, collaboration and emphasizing individual development, we will continue to bring to the stage high quality theater productions.
