Sweeney Todd Photos, DVDs and more! Courtesy of Aggie Craft:
Nicholas Bajis Photography will photograph and Silver Streak Media will film Sweeney Todd. Details for each:
  • The photo CDs are a fundraiser. The price for each CD is $20. For every CD sold, $10 will come back to Theatre CHS. The photos Nick took for Les Miserables were beautiful. There were about 300 total which included both the stage and pit.  Orders can be placed via our Google form: http://tinyurl.com/pa6guyk.
  • Silver Streak Media is available to record the show. Due to copyright laws, we can film for archival purposes only. This means each student can get a copy; however, no money can be made from the DVDs. Expenses for filming will be $450 plus the cost for 120 blank DVDs – about $500 total. Last year, we were fortunate in that one parent covered this expense. This year, we are asking for donations. Every dollar helps! You can pledge your donation on the following form: http://tinyurl.com/pb77arl.
  • Aggie Craft is our contact for photography and filming. Contact Aggie with questions at acraft1@gmail.com or 434-249-5735.
Other Theatre CHS News:
  • If you are interested in assisting with future fundraising events, please let me know. It is always nice to sell baked goods as well as have student representatives.
  • T-Shirts/Bake Sale/ Money Making Incentives— We are planning on having a bit more outward publicity with this year’s Sweeney Todd show, this means that we would also like to recoup the cost, if you are interested in helping with this, please let me know! As always, Thank you!
  • Questions about courses for next year? Visit www.theatreCHS.org and click on the “Classes” menu.
  • Summer time is rapidly approaching, as are deadlines for summer theater/technical theater programs in and around the area. Want to meet with me and discuss options? Let me know!
  • We are in immediate need of parents who would like to assist with costuming, backstage crew, weekend builds, prop finding, etc. for our upcoming amazing TheatreCHS production of Sweeney Todd. This is a really wonderful way to get involved not only in the spirit of the production, but in the community of what it is that we do in the theater Department. It really is a lot of fun!  If you are interested, please email me and let me know!
Remember, that if you aren’t using it yet, www.TheatreCHS.org is a tremendous utility for information regarding rehearsals, reserving tickets, and finding out information about programing. Students are encouraged to access the page so that they can receive updates for their classwork. Also, please add us on twitter if you haven’t done so already @theatreCHS

VTA Results are In!

For the third year in a row, Charlottesville High School participated in the Virginia Theater Association Conference.

Every year students across the state come together in Reston, Virginia and spend the weekend performing one act productions in competition, participate in a variety of different workshops, audition for college and pre-professional programs, and share in all things theatre and drama. Every year, students come away with a deeper more meaningful understanding of the creative performing arts through not only their own performances, but through viewing other productions from different communities.

One-Act Play  individual and group awards:

Women and War

Costume Merit Award — Awarded to student costumers

Technical Merit Award –Awarded to technical theater program (they loved our set)

All Star Actor Award — Trevor Craft, (Junior)

Overall — Honorable Mention, Best One-Act Play

Special Conference Activity Awards:

Student Flash Mob: Awarded  1st Place

Technical Theater Olympics: Awarded 3rd Place

Individual Student Achievements (Design Competition Awards)

Students were given a play title before the conference in which they had research, and come up with appropriate design based on what they read; students would then have an opportunity to describe their design concept to the panel of judges. Judges were professionals in the theater world

(Broadway Costume Designer was among them) This year, there were the most design submissions in VTA recent history

Scenic Design:  1st Place, Daniel Neale (Sophomore)

Costume Design: 1st Place Claire LeBlond (Sophomore)

VTA Student Advisory Board of Directors:

provides VTA’s largest membership base (students) a place to communicate with

other students who then provide advice and feedback to the VTA Board of Directors in relation to the annual conference

This year, Sophomore, Daniel Neale was chosen to represent the student board as Vice President!

Auditions/Scholarships for high school seniors seeking admission to college and university theatre programs.

This year, three of the TheatreCHS students chose to audition for colleges represented at the conference.

These students were, Denise Folley, Kira Jackson, and Nadasia Walker.

Of these three students, ALL THREE were offered acceptance into theatre programs!! Scholarships were offered as well!

It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved!

Thank you for being the school division that we are!

We clearly grow and achieve success with fine arts in a division that supports the endeavors we have to challenge and discover!

Visit VTAsite.org for scrapbook photos of this year’s conference.

9/30-10/4 Theater Newsletter

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends,

HAPPY OCTOBER!!!!

Please review the google calendar for rehearsal/class deadlines and updates. If there are additional email addresses that you would like me to add to the shared calendar, let me know, and I’ll happily share those with the calendar as well.

Thanks so much for coming by to visit last week during back-to-school night!

A special shout out to Karen and John McGrath who took the time out of their schedules to assist with our annual bake sale. Remember that proceeds go towards assisting with all areas of the theater program ranging from cost assistance for trips to material purchases for set builds.

Another shout out to the parents and friends who have donated costume pieces to the Department for Women and War!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO CHAPERONE A TRIP THIS MONTH?

Let me know! We could still use a few more!

the VTA/VHSL One-Act festival season has become very popular amongst the students.

This year over 40 students will be participating!

OTHER BLACK BOX PROJECTS/FUND RAISER OPPORTUNITIES:

Intro to Drama students will be producing a school-wide haunted ghost story house on Wednesday, October 30th. The idea is that proceeds from this event can also serve to fund future trips for students. PARENTS OF INTRO TO DRAMA STUDENTS,  WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN ASSISTING WITH THIS? IT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO GET INVOLVED AND ALSO GET TO KNOW ME BETTER.

GETTING THE DRAMA ON STAGE

As a new incentive for performance diversity and self expression, I am developing with our new librarian Kelly Kroese, a slam night also known as “NO SHAME” which I would like to have on a monthly basis occurring in the black box theater. Of course, there are ground rules, but I feel like this would be a terrific way for students to create, sing, act, dance, paint, show their film projects, etc. My advanced acting class is going to be spearheading this endeavor, but again, if you are interested in assisting with this, please let me know!

TheatreCHS Newsletter 9/16-9/20

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends,

Fall is feeling quite underway this weekend, and we are rapidly getting busy with any number of projects in the theater department. Last week, we had our first Forensics meeting, first reading of the Winter Play, Eurydice, continued to press on with our One Act Play, Women and War, and students, Daniel Neale and Emma Lather have been choreographing the opening number of our Musical Theater Ensemble production of Pippin.

This email is your weekly update regarding rehearsals, classwork, updates, etc. If you would like to sign up for automatic emails from this blog, simply add your email to the website.

We are still looking for some people who might like to Chaperone either the VTA trip (Oct 24-27) and/or VHSL One-Act Conference Saturday Oct. 19

Please let me know if you might be interested in assisting with these exciting events.
For mor information about the VHSL One-Act conference, feel free to visit the website:
http://www.vhsl.org/activities.theatre

Since there have been some issues getting all the correct information about the VHSL conference to you, I wanted to take this time to apologize for any confusion or challenges that this date

(Oct. 19) may have caused you in your planning. VHSL or The Virginia High School League has always been an extremely important component of high school related activities ranging from Debate to Football. For many years, the Drama department has returned with 1st place titles in one-act competitions. We have competed all the way to the state level, and this is no small matter-we have some GREAT talent at CHS!
Once the official schedule (with our time slot) has been generated, I will share it with all cast/crew members involved in the production.
Currently I have made the request for us to perform our piece FIRST on Saturday, Oct 19 although no decisions have officially been made. This would make it approximately a 10:45 AM performance. We will in all likelihood be hearing some kind of confirmation in the next couple business days.  Thanks so much for your patience.note:
All actors are expected to be present at this performance as it is the same performance that will be done for VTA. (There will not be two casts for separate events)

Crew members may have more flexibility with regard to participation with VHSL event. Many thanks for your understanding as well as flexibility with this busy time! Also thanks to those of you who have volunteered costumes for this historical show!

Audition Info:

This year’s FALL audition schedule shall be a rolling one:

Starting on Monday August 26th, there will be rolling auditions for the One-Act play, Fall Play, and Parts in the MTE Show.

You need not indicate what show you are interested in unless you would like to be only considered for ONE show.

Callbacks will occur only as needed. If you do not get a callback, it has no bearing on getting a role in a show!
